About Silica Sand Detail

Silica sand, also known as quartz sand, is a high-purity granular material primarily composed of silicon dioxide (SiO). To be classified as silica sand, the material must typically contain at least 95% SiO and less than 0.6% iron oxide.
Core Characteristics
  • Composition: Predominantly quartz, a chemically inert and hard mineral.
  • Physical Properties:
    • Hardness: 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale.
    • Melting Point: High, approximately 1,713C (3,115F).
    • Color: Usually white or colorless, but can range to buff, yellow, or grey depending on trace minerals.
    • Grain Shape: Ranges from rounded to angular depending on the source and processing.
  • Chemical Stability: Highly resistant to chemical weathering and acids, except for strong bases and hydrofluoric acid.
Key Applications
Silica sand's unique properties make it vital across several industrial sectors:
  • Glassmaking: The primary component in windows, bottles, and fiberglass.
  • Water Filtration: Used in pool filters and municipal systems to trap contaminants due to its uniform grain size.
  • Foundry Casting: Used to create molds for metal parts because it can withstand molten metal temperatures.
  • Construction: Added to concrete, mortar, and roofing shingles to improve durability and strength.
  • Oil & Gas: Used as "frac sand" in hydraulic fracturing to hold open fissures and allow oil to flow.
  • Sports & Leisure: Common in golf course bunkers and as infill for synthetic turf.
Safety and Handling
While essential for industry, inhaling fine crystalline silica dust (respirable silica) is a significant health hazard. Prolonged exposure can lead to silicosis, an incurable lung disease, as well as lung cancer and kidney disease. Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and dust control measures are mandatory in workplaces handling this material.
